Lovlina Borgohain is an Indian amateur woman boxer. She is the first sportswoman of Assam to get selected for the Olympics. She is a Welterweight pugilist for the mission Tokyo Olympic 2021. She has won the Asian Boxing Championship and World Boxing Championship two times.

Lovlina Borgohain was born on 2nd October 1997 to Tiken Borgohain and Mamoni Borgohain at Barpathar, Golaghat (Assam). Her father was a farmer and used to get a monthly wage of  Rs. 1300. She also used to sell vegetables during the weekly market in Golaghat. She is very hardworking from her childhood. She has two elder sisters both are twins. Both sisters are doing service in BSF and CISF respectively. 

Lovlina Borgohain is Hindu. She is an Ahom Girl. Her sisters are Lisa Borgohain and Lima Borgohain.

Her childhood was a little different from other kids. She was tall than her age. She loves to wear half pants and T-shirts more than mekhela-sador (Assamese traditional women's dress). She drops out of school early due to fear of wearing mekhela-sador. Since it is compulsory to wear mekhela-sador in the government school of Assam.

The financial condition of her family is not good. So she started pisciculture (rearing of fish) after dropping out of school. 

One day her father brought sweets packaged in a newspaper. Then on the newspaper piece, she found an article about Mohammed Ali, the greatest boxer of all time. That was the first time she knew about the term "Boxing".

The turning point of Lovlina's life

Muay-Thai Martial Arts practice is the turning point of Lovlina Borgohain. She has two elder sisters. Both the elder sisters used to practice Muay-Thai Martial Arts. So, Lovlina also joins with them. But she loves boxing more than martial arts. The martial arts coach introduce her to a trainer 'Padum Boro' of the Sports Authority of India in 2012. 

Then Sports Authority of India saw her talent and brought her to Guwahati (Assam). Then after hard work and practicing boxing, Lovlina never had to look back on her life. She has received many prizes and titles in boxing.

 

Career Information


She first won a Gold medal at Sub Junior Boxing held in Kolkata, 2012. 
She won a Silver medal at International Nation Cup held in Serbia, 2013.

In 2016,  Lovlina first played Senior Category Boxing but cannot win any trophy. Then she was selected in the President's Cup in Kazakhstan, 2017. She won the bronze medal.

Lovlina won Bronze Medal in the Asian Boxing championship 2017 in Vietnam. She won Gold Medal in the International Boxing Championship 2018. She was also selected in Commonwealth Games 2018 but cannot win any medal.

She won Silver in Ulaanbaatar Cup, 2018 in Mongolia, and also won a bronze medal in the 13th International Silesian Championship 2018. 

She won a bronze medal in AIBA Women World Boxing Championship 2018 in Delhi.

Lovlina won Bronze Medal in the 69kg category on her 1st World Boxing Championship. She won Bronze Medal in her 2nd World Boxing Championship, 2019 held in China. She won bronze in the 69kg category at the Asian Boxing Championship held in Dubai on 31st May 2021.

Lovlina Borgohain received Arjuna Award for Outstanding Performance in Sports and Games in 2020.

And in early 2020, she sealed her spot in the Olympics by beating Uzbekistan’s Maftunakhon Melieva in the quarterfinals of the Asian Olympic qualifiers.

She fell in the semi-finals to Gu Hong of China and had to settle for another bronze though but her mission was accomplished. Her next aim, however, is to change the hue of the metal.

Lovlina Borgohain is the first sportswoman of Assam to get selected for the Olympics. The Tokyo Olympics 2021 is her first Olympics. Her first boxing game was held on 27 July 2021.

1st Game (Round of 16): On 27 July, Nadine Apetz of Germany was against Lovlina Borgohain of India.  Lovlina won the game by defeating Nadine 3-2.

2nd Game (quarterfinal 2): On 30th July, Lovlina Borgohain won against N.C. Chen of Chinese Taipei. Lovlina won the game by defeating Chen 4-1.

3rd Game (semifinal): On 4th August, Lovlina lost against Busenaz Sürmeneli of Turkey. Lovlina lost the game 5-0 against Busenaz.

She got the bronze medal in Tokyo Olympics 2020.
