Assam Bihu Dance in Guinness World Records 2023 |
Bihu Dance in Guinness Book: Assam has set a new Guinness World Record for the largest Bihu dance performance in a single venue. Over 11,000 folk dancers and drummers gathered at the Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati on April 13 to perform the Bihu dance, aiming to put their performance on Rongali Bihu. The record was set on the eve of the Rongali Bihu, which is one of the three bihus of Assam.
The record was created on April 13, 2023, at around 5.30 pm at Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati. It was earlier scheduled to take place on April 14 with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in attendance, however, was preponed.
The performers included singers and those playing traditional instruments such as dhol, taal, gogona, toka, pepa, and xutuli, among others. The event was organized by the Assam government, which aimed to "organize the largest Bihu dance performance at a single venue and make it to the Guinness Book of World Records in the folk-dance category,
The state government announced that Rs 25,000 would be provided to each of the performers and the trainers, apart from Rs 10,000 earlier provided for procuring the garments and other essentials.
The performers were selected from across the state, with at least 70 per cent of the performers being women and 30 per cent being men. Dibrugarh had the most representation, with 1,400 performers in attendance, while South Salmara had the least representation with only 20 performers.
The certificate for ‘Assamese Gamusa’, which had received the recognition of the GI tag, was also handed to the state government.
