Gauhati University was established on 26 January 1948.

Gauhati University was fused by an Act of 1947. It began working on 26 January 1948 as an affiliating, educating and private college in a couple of brief structures in Guwahati, with K. K. Handique as the principal Vice-Chancellor. Phanidhar Dutta, Sailandhar Rajkhowa and Sarat Kumar Dutta were chosen as the Registrar, Treasurer and Secretary of University Classes individually. The seal of the University chose from among many submitted, was planned by T. Mukherjee, a material fashioner of Ahmedabad. Two Sanskrit words engraved on it – Vidyaya Sadhayeta (which means accomplishment through learning) – demonstrate the witticism of the University.

Gauhati University gets Annual Financial Grants from the Government of Assam and Development Grants from the University Grants Commission separated from various subsidizing organizations like CSIR, DST DBT, NEC, ICAR, ICHR, MAKAIAS, among others, who support different research ventures.
